The Story Behind the Lincoln Head

This massive sculpture of Abraham Lincoln was crafted to commemorate his 150th birthday. Originally, it stood at the highest point (8,640 feet) of the historic Lincoln Highway. Unfortunately, vandalism forced its relocation in 2001 to a more secure location—a rest stop along Interstate 80.
The Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental automobile route in the United States, spans 3,500 miles, connecting New York City to San Francisco. It paved the way for modern cross-country travel. Over time, parts of the highway became US 30 in the 1920s and later evolved into Interstate 80 in the 1950s.

The sculpture itself was created by Robert Russin, a University of Wyoming art professor and an avid admirer of Abraham Lincoln. Standing tall and proud, the head pays tribute not only to Lincoln but also to the vision of a connected America.
Where is the Lincoln Head Located?
Still guessing where this iconic Lincoln head can be found? It’s perched 11 miles east of Laramie, Wyoming, and 20 miles west of Cheyenne, at the Lincoln Monument Rest Area on I-80, exit 323.

The bronze sculpture weighs over two tons and rises 13.5 feet tall atop a 30-foot granite pedestal. Its placement ensures visibility from both sides of the highway. Interestingly, the head’s exaggerated proportions and small shoulders give it a slightly cartoonish charm.
A Unique Summer Stop
One unforgettable part of visiting this unique roadside attraction? Snow on the ground—in the middle of summer! If you’re traveling through Wyoming on I-80, make sure to take a detour to see this giant Lincoln head.

It’s a fun way to connect with history, marvel at an impressive work of art, and create lasting road trip memories. So next time you’re out exploring, don’t forget to add this stop to your itinerary. Happy travels!
